Talcs boost polyolefins and bioplastics

Imerys Talc will feature the advantages of mico-lamellar and hi-aspect ratio talcs at K 2013.
The Toulouse, France-based company claims they help sustainability because they are infinitely recyclable in end products. They are variously suited to film, thermoforming and blow molding using polyolefins and biopolymers. They can also restore properties in recycled plastics, claims the company.
Mistrocell talcs help control cell size in foamed applications. Polyolefin composites using the nucleating agents show improved stiffness and uniform bubble distribution.
The new Crys-Talc product is a high-brightness, micro-lamellar talc for nucleating in homopolymer and copolymer polypropylene where they boost rigidity, impact strength and heat resistance. Usage levels can be as low as 0.5 percent.
The new Mistroblock is aimed at film antiblocking. This very bright micro-lamellar material lowers coefficient of friction in polyethylene film production while allowing high clarity and low haze. This talc is also suitable to biopolymer film production.
Ultrafine grades in the Steamic, Jetfine and HAR lineups are good reinforcing agents and nucleators in renewable bioplastics. They increase stiffness and temperature resistance.
Imerys Talc is part of Imerys Group, a mineral producer with production sites in 50 countries. It logged sales of 3.8 billion euros in 2012.
